Food waste gets ugly

Food waste gets ugly

Roughly one third of the food produced in the world for human consumption yearly – approximately 1.3billion tonnes – gets lost or wasted.

Food losses and waste amount to roughly US$680billion and US$310 in industrial and developing countries respectively.

Fruits and vegetables, roots and tubers have the highest wastage rates than any food.

In the retail world, large quantities of food are wasted due to quality standards and ridiculous “pretty” requirements.

Global food loss and wastage is expected to reach 1.86 billion tonnes by 2050, off which Asia contributes to a whopping 55%. (Bloomberg)

Food loss and food waste refers to the edible parts of plants and livestock that are harvested and produced for human consumption but are not ultimately consumed by people.

IRGA proposes to use blockchain and other technologies to have better data captured on supply chain, to provide traceability from farm to the plate.

So during your next trip to the supermarket, remember to only buy what you need!
